The starter just spins and the starter gears like fall off track just bought it not sure on the year was told it was a 01 but I don’t think it is just trying to figure out why the gears are falling off track
the only gear is on the end of the starter shaft and you dont need to pull the flywheel to check that. instead of a bendix like a car starter that gear engages a one way bearing other wise known as a starter clutch. that starter clutch sounds like your problem but you will need to pull the flywheel to be sure. you wont be able to get that flywheel off with out the puller. you will do more damage that the 22 bucks the puller costs from ebay or amazon. ask around that puller works on lots of different bike maybe someone will let you use it
Don't cheap out on flywheel puller. They cost like 12 bucks on amazon. It's not worth screwing it up because you wouldn't spend the 12 bucks. Wait till you have the money. If you can't afford 12 bucks then you can't afford to have a quad.
There is a idler gear on a shaft and then a one way clutch in back of flywheel. If you cannot afford a puller, you have the wrong hobby. All the parts you are going to need are far more than the puller.
