My brakes got like that too up until the point they stopped working all together, i ended up bringing it to the local Yamaha dealer, i tryed bleeding them myslef but it turned out it needed a whole new master cylinder. Has your neighbor tried bleeding them? Its easiest to bench bleed them meaning taking them completey off the quad and doing it. Try going to www.trengaracing.com for specific directions.
