Does anyone know what it means when the reverse light flashes?

Over 2500 RPM for more then 5 seconds when the vehicle isn't moving. THis means your speed sensor is working...

It will reset. Take it for a ride.

sweet. thanks guys. i noticed it would usually only start flashing when i launched with a little throttle. makes sense.

What if it flashes while it's in gear?

I called a local tech, and the speed sensor did come up in the conversation along with a whole list of other things including the CDI.

If it is the speed sensor, where is this located, and how hard is it to swap out?

I figured I'd have a response by now. Let me clarify this a bit, maybe it's a bit murky.

The reverse light will flash when it's rev'd too high in neutral, pop it in gear, and it stops blinking. I know that part is ok.

Here's my problem. I get going, and under hard acceleration/high rev's the reverse light starts flashing. Even happens in fifth gear. Now this doesn't reset itself like in neutral. It doesn't stop blinking until you shut down, and start it again. As long as I keep my RPM's low, the light doesn't come on, but as soon as I wanna play, it comes on.

I'll check that out as soon as I dig it out of the snowdrift. I really need to get some kind of cover for it.

If the cleaning doesn't work, then it is probably either the neutral or reverse sensor down by the sprocket. You can actually ground that wire out to the engine and it will run, but the reverse light stays off all the time, even in reverse. And I think it will then start in gear without the clutch in. I would take the time to fix it right though, it is alot easier and safer that way!

These sensors, are they an external, or internal part?

I'm having trouble finding any reference to these parts in the shop manual I downloaded.

I know the Speed Sensor costs around $75-$85 depending on who you go through to get it. That's only because I can find them in the parts fiche on parts sites, and that just gives you a vague idea where you'll find these parts on the machine.

The sensor I am talking about are external, down by the shift shaft. There are 2 wires that go down there, one for each sensor. The one is the green/white wire and I'm not sure of the color on the other. I bought both and it fixed mine, I thnk they were 8 bucks apiece. Just look down by your shift shaft and you'll see em. One is a push on type connector and the other is a philips head screw that is real small.

The green/white wire, that is also the one that you ground out to bypass the reverse rev limiter by grounding out? Or, is it the other unknown color wire? I'm sick and tired of the reverse rev-limiter.

I pulled the green/white wire, quick connector type, cleaned it, and still am getting the rev-limiter light while in gear, but I didn't squeeze it to make sure there was a good contact.

Going to replace the connector with a new one from a hardware store, and make a jumper to ground it out to take care of the reverse rev limiter.

I don't care about having a reverse indicator. I just want to get rid of the blinking idiot light while in gear, and be able to have normal power in reverse. Hopefully the new connector, and jumper to ground takes care of both.

Assembled/installed the jumper today. I got rid of the reverse rev-limiter, but I'm still getting the flashing light in gear.

I noticed the actual bullet connector for the sensor is tarnished. Would cleaning it help, or is the sensor shot?

Just for sh*ts n giggles, I tried to start it in gear without the clutch pulled in, the "Doh!" light came on, and it didn't even try to roll over. So grounding out the green/white wire will not let you start in gear without the clutch being pulled in. Myth Busted!

I know this is an old thread, but it's been referred to lately, and so I need to correct an error -

If the reverse light flashes (not flickers intemittenlty) while riding, the speed sensor (right rear of the engine case) is unplugged or malfunctioning. This has nothing to do with the reverse switch.

Also, grounding the green/white wire has nothing to do with bypassing the clutch switch , which is a black/yellow wire, to be able to start in gear.

I sure am glad I'm not the only one who noticed the errors in the other posts.
