I'd like some shocks with a little more adjustment than the stock units, but don't want to drop a ton of coin. A few questions:

1) Are there any other Yamaha shocks that will interchange while keeping the stock A-arms (450X, 450R, Raptor)?

2) What years should I be looking out for?

3) Are all of the Yamaha piggybacks rebuildable?

4) Should I just ante up for some aftermarket units?

Any help is appreciated.

the stock shocks are all about the same. yes they are rebuildable. if you want something more then you need to spend the coin. dont take this wrong, i am not trying to be a dick but unless you are pro caliber rider and tuner your probably not going to get much bang for your buck. maybe if you are track racing every weekend on a different track and take the time to learn to tune your suspension. there are some deals on ebay but that is a crap shoot. if youi just want it because it looks BA and you have the budget i understand. here is what i did. i think most of the pogo that i assume you are trying to get rid of is due to the short a arms. compare the 450 to the 450r. my first yfz is a bored and stroked 501 with a port and polished head, cam mod and the carb and air box are done. it is not much of a trail machine so i went with plus 2 arms and reduced the rebound a little and it is awesome on the dunes. my other one just has the head and carb stuff done. i went with plus 2 and up 1 ( 2 inch wider each side for a total of 4 and moves the ball joints up 1 inch for a longer wheel base) hauser arms on that machine tweaked the factory shocks and it is a whole new machine trail and sand. the suspension is supple without being soft and no pogo. i found the arms on ebay use and was under 400 bucks on both machines. if you go with the a arms look for a set that is complete with brake lines. the ones i got had everything from the front brake lever out so i got a complete set of spare parts for free.

Thanks for the response, and good info.

By no means am I a pro rider, or anything even close for that matter, and I agree I won't be using a better suspension for all it's worth.

Thing is, around here, the trails are either really tight, or really stony (honestly not great for sport quads). The stock shocks just feel hard with preload at half or more, and springy below, if that makes any sense. They just don't seem great in the stony stuff. But I really don't want to go wider either based on trail widths.

I also don't want to spend a pile of money because, well, I'm not a pro rider who will get the most out of it. It's why I was focusing on the factory take-offs.

If all the factory stuff is the same, maybe I just hang back until I find a good deal on someone else's cast-off elkas or something.

watch the recyclers on ebay. i did see a fairly nice set for 400 the other day. or better yet sell the sport quad and get a yz-fx trail bike they are ready to race from the factory and built for the trails you are riding

What year(s) would fit?

New ride isn't in the budget for me this year. Have an 02 warrior I'm slowly working on, and my oldest will need to step up to a raptor 125. All good stuff. All too expensive...

04-09 12-13 for sure not sure about the interchange but the recyclers are pretty good at putting all of them in. i remember those days just get them outfitted and and they out grow it, good times.

...one more follow on.

Is it the length that is the variable on the different yfz/yfzr/raptor shocks, or is the eyelet width different too?

i cant say for sure that the yfz r shocks wont fit i am assuming they wont because the a arms are a lot wider. i think the rings are the same size.
