1990 Yamaha Moto4 250 Range Selector adjustment

I have a 90 moto4 250 and the range selector seems to be out of adjustment.

If i start from low and move to reverse, the reverse light comes on and it engages into reverse before the selector is all the way in reverse.

Once in reverse if I shift to low it stays in reverse unless I go a little past Low range.

If I attempt to put into high range its almost as if i need to move the shifter more forward (which isnt possible).

What is the proper way to adjust the range linkage.

I dont have this "red button" that i read in other threads.

The range shift linkage uses an adjustable rod with two ball sockets one left handed the other right handed.

I put the the bike into reverse (audibly engaged and indicator light on) I then adjusted the rod bringing the shifter itself into the correct detent. I had to unbolt the shifter cover to get access to one of the jam nuts.

Tightened down the jam nuts, reinstalled the shifter cover and verified all ranges worked.
