For all you Yamaha Banshee owners looking for a better, easier way to advance or retard the timing of your motor, well here is your answer! Warp Drive Performance now produces adjustable stator plates for your screaming 2-stroke. Unlike most others sold, this unit lets you adjust your timing without having to remove the flywheel, cutting the time it takes to do the procedure dramatically.
When we received our stator plate, we immediatley noticed that the machined edges were a little on the sharp side. Not too imporant since you will never need to handle it after installation, but beveling them a bit during manufacturing would make for an overall nicer appearance, while preventing any chance of a minor cut to the hands. Keep in mind, the one we are testing is a pre-production piece, so we are sure it will be corrected soon. Visually the rest of the all-alluminum stator plate is nice, and constructed very well. It comes with decent instructions, but could be better. Inexperienced wrenchers may find them a little confusing.
Installation of the stator plate itself was easy, but of course removing the flywheel is never a "fun" chore, which is why this plate is so nice. Once installed, you never need to remove the flywheel again since all adjustments are made outside of the flywheel, by loosening the 2 allen screws and sliding the pick-up coil up or down to the desired setting, and then re-tightening the screws. You can retard the timing from 0 to -4 degrees, and advance it from 0 to 10 degrees. Another slight problem we encountered was that the bottom mounting hole (one of three) seemed to be a little on the small side, making it impossible to fit a socket in to tighten the mounting bolt. It didn't matter during installation since the stock bolts that are used also can be tightened using a phillips screwdriver, but if you ever need to remove the plate down the road for any reason, more than likely a screwdriver won't cut it. The bolts often get rusty and require a tool that you can put some leverage into. Removing the stock stator plate proved this. Again, we will mention this to the manufacturer and hope it will be improved before production starts.
Overall we are very pleased with this new adjustable stator plate. With a little refinement it will be an even greater product, and should be an obvious choice compared to other similar units and "degree keys", which can be troublesome. The adjustability is wonderful, craftsmanship is pretty good, and installation is simple. We also feel that compared to others, they are priced well at $100.
