Engine cases are vulnerable targets for damage from the drive chain of an ATV. If the chain loses contact with the sprockets, it can jump off track and become lodged between the front sprocket and engine side case. Often when this happens a piece of the engine case itself can get damaged leaving a hole in the engine case. Of course this is not a good thing, and the best way to avoid this is to replace worn sprockets and chains and keep the chain properly adjusted at all times. Unfortunatley, even when these are monitored closely, it can and still does happen.
What else can you do? Add a "case saver"! Custom Innovations has a great line of CNC-machined Yamaha Raptor engine case savers which are priced well, and can save you a lot of heartache if your ATV decides to "throw" a chain. The units we are reviewing are made for all models of Raptors, and come in 2 styles. Both case savers are made of tough nylon; one is a case saver and sprocket cover all in one-piece, and the other is more stylish and convenient with the addition of a "quick-change" billet aluminum sprocket cover. They both are a full 1 1/2 inches thick with the billet aluminum cover on the one model being 1/4 inch thick. They are definitely strong, and should aid in protection by a large margin.
Both mount using the stock Yamaha bolts, and the billet aluminum cover on the one case saver is attached with three stainless steel button head allen screws. It can be removed easily without the hassle of removing the footpeg and shifter. We have only one gripe with the installation; the mounting holes were a tad too small, so we had to drill them out to make them larger. Not a big problem, but they should come ready to bolt on with no modifications needed. We love the looks of them, and both are constructed just as well as eachother, but of course we preffered the better looks and versatility of the quick-change billet aluminum sprocket cover. For the price, ($65, compared to $60 for the one-piece unit) we feel it is a much better deal.
