Transmission Oil

I am wondering what oil to use.....i have used havoline 10W-30.... and my manual says oils that say energy conserving 2 will contain anti friction additives...... my havoline just says energy conserving....what do all u guys run in ure blaster?

Click Here , and read the WHOLE post!...ATF Type F!

BTW, DON'T USE AUTOMOTIVE ENGINE OILS!!!...Too many friction modifiers in that stuff...it's bad for the clutch.

!!!You can only use ATF Type F in the gear box of 2 stroke engines...NOT 4 STROKES!!!

At a Ford dealership, or any automitive parts store.

You MIGHT have a hard time finding it at a Ford dealership because this oil was desighned for early 1980's and older Ford vehicles, so they may not stock it anymore?

However, you will have a pretty easy time finding it at any auto parts store/warehouse.

I use Castrol 10W-30 oil in my gearbox and it works fine.

Actually I know it works fine. I've been using that oil in my gearbox for a couple years now without any problems. My clutch is still working as good as ever. I do stay away from any synthetic oils though and just put straight 10W-30 in.

In fact, Yamaha suggests to use either Yamalube 4 (10W-30) or an SAE 10W-30 type SE motor oil.

I use Bel Ray 2 stroke transmission oil in my 2003 blaster. And it works great!!! and i use Bel Ray 2 stroke oil in mine 2 and they both are really good oil's, and a very good for ur engine.

I just ordered some 75 weight Maxima MTL Transmission Oil, but yes the manual says in bold words to use any 10w-30 motor oil type SE....and my dealer even told me to use a good 10w-30 motor oil....

I won't argue with using motor oil, that is fine. But you should make sure that it is NOT "energy conserving" motor oil! That is the stuff that contains the most anti-friction modifiers.

The thing about automotive motor oils is that almost ALL of them are "energy conserving" oils. The kind that have anti-friction modifiers.

Anti-friction modifiers will NOT hurt the gears or seals, but it isn't the best stuff for the wet clutch. At the same time, it isn't going to make your clutch go out prematurly. It will just slightly shorten the life of your clutch.

If you race, or ride very hard, it will signifigantly shorten the life of your clutch. For just normal, easy riding, it works just fine.

The thing about using heavy weight oils, like 70w or more...(in my mind, anything over 30w is too thick/high of weight), the stuff is just too
thick! It will cause extra/unwanted drag in the tranny, it will cause ecxess
clutch slippage, it will create harder shifting characteristics and it will eat up a small amount of horse power (and lets face it, the Blaster doesn't have any extra horse power to give up!)

ATF Type F will not make your clutch last forever, it won't make your clutch last for a much longer time than 10w-30, but it will make it last a noticeable amount longer than any 10w-30 oil will...Plus, it's dirt cheap compared to Yamalube 4!

my friend is running 80wt in his CR125, and it runs just fine....

Does your friend race his 125, or just ride it around like most people would ride a 125?

I'm willing to bet that he doesn't race it, because if he does, he wouldn't be using 80w oil in it. If he does race and uses 80w oil, then he is making a big mistake because the oil alone is costing him atleast a couple of horsepower.

For the life of me, I just can't understand why people are using such thick oils in the gear box? Would you run 80w in your cars engine?

the only thing the dealer had when i bought my oil was pj1 80w...i asked about it or belray and he said the pj1 would be better...am i really losing power?

Dude you needa calm down - 10w-30 isn't goin to kill your clutch nor is it going to be anyworse then running any other type lube - your clutch is gonna go out regaurdless - I've raced dirtbikes since I could walk and we've always used 10w-30 in the case - I ride 125/250b and am in 2nd in points for my district so yes I ride my shit hard - its gonna wear out no matter what you do to try to stop it - the oil isn't going to effect it as greatly as your claiming it will.

Yes, your absolutly right. I did make it sound like a big deal. It's not a big deal!

If there is any effect on the life of the clutch or horsepower lose, it would be so minimal that you probably would never notice it anyways.

Just run whatever you feel comfortable with, that way we are all happy.

well the only automotive motor oil that doesnt have "energy conserving", is that reall cheap Warren Oil. That is what my brother runs in his 300ex, and he races enduro w/ it.

Well thanks to everyone that posted, i only bought 2 quarts of the 75w, so that is about 4 oil changes, which wont be long... and if i dont like it, i wont run it anymore...and no my friend doesnt race his CR....yet. he plans to start racing in a year or so.
