Default Need help please

I just bought my first quad a week ago. Its a 02 Raptor 660R. Everything was good til yesterday, now when I try to start it all the starter does is spin. It wont engage. I finally got it to catch yesterday after tapping on the starter a little bit. Once it warmed up the starter would engage and start fine. Do I need a starter or what?? Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately you found the biggest weak spot of the 660 Raptor, the Starter clutch. the good news for you is there is an after market solution that is nearly indestructible.

LA Designs, Raptor one way, Yamaha Raptor 660 starter Clutch, LL Extreme

Default Another starter clutch question

So I know I need a starter clutch! Do I need to buy just the clutch kit or do I need the 52 tooth gear too?

The best bet is to buy the entire kit. The only way to tell is to disassemble.. If the 52 tooth has any wear where it contacts the one way replace it.. Often it will have deep grooves from the one way rollers.

It can, depending on how the one way failed. Usually the spring that holds the rollers breaks, sometimes letting the rollers fall into the bottom end of your engine..

Can somebody hook me up with a link to some instructions on how to take it apart and put the new gear and stuff in and then get it back together? I would really appreciate the help.

Hello,
I just wanted to say thank you to all who posted on this thread. I just bought an 03 660 for my son yesterday and it started ok when i bought it and 3-4 times after that, but when i got it home it wouldn't engage. I looked online and ran across this thread and realized this is more than likely the same problem. I ordered the parts today, as recommended.
My son and I are looking forward to getting it running. Now... onto print out the instructions... this may be interesting as neither of us have ever worked on a quad before... may have to beg for help from my ex husband, but i'm sure we'll figure it out.
Thanks again for your help!!!
