Hey, well after several hours yesterday and today I finally got my rear end disassembled except for the bearings and seals. I've been "beating" on the old bearings to get them out, but they don't seem Taking out the axle took me a couple hours (at least) and I'm really hoping it won't take that much time and effort for the bearings. I have a piece of wood and a hammer I've been using to get it/them out just like the instructions in the "how-to's" say, but the only thing happening is the old seal is getting all fudged up. They don't seem to be moving. Am I missing something? If anyone has some suggestions for what to do/use to get them out easier or quicker, please tell me! Thanxx in advance! PeAcE :)
Not to try to bust on ya, but if the axel took long to get out then your gonna be there for days with them bearings! When i changed my bearings the seals came out easily with some prying with a screwdriver. I TRIED using a hammer and screwdriver to pound the races out but it just doesnt work! I finally bought a $40 DREMEL and cut both races out in about 3 hours with out gouging the carrier. Its by no means easy! I still had to pound a screwdriver to get under the races and loosen them, but thats the easiest way i know of. Gte a $40-60 DREMEL with some cutting discs adn you should be able to get them out in an afternoon.

Thanxx, but I was just went down to the garage, looked and felt more intensely, and I think they are coming out. I'm not fooling with it anymore tonight though. It's almost 11 pm and I've been wearing myself out beating on that damn quad today!! lol Thanxx for the tip. If it doesn't work I might have to look into the dremel. PeAcE :)
Take a propane torch and heat the carrier up, that will make it kinda "let loose" of the bearing. Then get a long piece of metal, maybe a very long punch, and stick it through the right side of the housing to get to the left bearing. Then knock the hell out of it, but remember to move the position of where your hitting it. (Example: Hit the bottom a few times, then move to the top of the bearing, then each side.) They should start to move after awhile.
Good Luck!

They can be REALLY hard to get out sometimes. Try using a piece of metal instead of the block of wood, but take your time and make sure you don't damage the inside of the carrier. Heating them up can work too.
You think this is fun wait till you try some worn out swingarm pivot bearings!
If your axle didnt come out easily you will probably need to replace the spacer tube bewteen the bearings ($26), it crushes a little everytime you retighten the axle nuts. it kind of mushrooms out at the edges a little and will grab the axle and make it a bear to remove. also if its out of spec and not replaced the new bearings wont last the season.
I had the same problem, your bearings are welded to the carrier. you need to either, Get a torch and heat up the metal so it expands so you can slide the bearings out, or continuosly do what your doing, that way the bearing actually breaks up, or if you have a machine shop around, use a hydrauluc press to get them out, and to get them in the hydraulic press is excellent, hope I helped, Jaime
Well I managed to get the seals out, but the bearings are siezed in place. I guess I'll try the heat thing. Thanxx again for the replies!
EDIT: :)4 :)6 Something just occured to me. I had the piece of wood against the right side bearing trying to beat out the left side one. Should I have something sticking through the right bearing and spacer and push DIRECTLY against the right side bearing? If this is the case I know to rotate positions as not to sieze the bearing in place. thanxx
EDIT II: got em out with some crap of my dad's. Didn't hurt anything, got it cleaned up, greased, and bearings & seals installed. I'll finish it tomorrow. Man I sure do wanna ride that thing!!!! :D
Yeah buddy there is a spacer in the carrier so you have to sitck something thru the bearing on the right and press on the inside of the left one. I usually use a crowbar or something like that, I've done this like 3 times. It took you several hours to get the axle out? The only thing that gives me a problem when doing that is the clip on the masterlink.
