Default Warrior Starts and Dies

Hey all

I posted a thread about 2 weeks ago titled "97 warrior clutch mod" You guys helped me out a ton and i appreciate it.

I decided to take my warrior into the woods with me today for the 2nd time.

I got pretty far and the thing stalled . I couldn't get it started back up but the first time i tried it made a "pfft" noise which sounded like it came from the motor. I have a weak battery so it died pretty quick while trying to get it re-started. luckily someone was with me and helped me tow it home.

When i got home i hooked it up to a starter and tried starting it. Instead of making a sound like the engine was gonna fire up every once in a while it would make a "tick-tick" sound.

I took the air filter out and sprayed some starter fluid and it started right up. Hit the throttle for a few seconds and eventually died.

I then started it again and tried to pull the choke out to get it to stay running off it's own fuel and bam it backfired and died.

So it doesn't seem to be starting off it' own fuel. I haven't taken the carb out yet but i recently just changed my main jet to accomodate the Pro-Circuit exhaust i have on there.

The main jet is set to a 152.5

Any ideas before i check the obvious?

Would pictures or videos of something help? if so what?

Ok so after i realized i was bored i went outside to work on it. Checked the spark plug and it was black. Realized it was probably from before when the other jet was in it that the previous owner drilled out like a jackass.

I was looking all around the carb area to see if i could see something and you wouldn't believe it. The intake boot has a huge 2 inch tear in it.

This thing is BRAND NEW. I bought it back in february but haven't ridden the quad with it at all. Around the block just testing it out til i went on to the next problem kind of stuff.

I'm guessing this is the "pfft" sound i heard while trying to start it.

What would cause this to tear? too much air coming in? is the carb too tight on it which caused it to stretch and break? I mean come on!

I just want to ride :(

Is the fuel valve flowing plenty of fuel?

It sounds like it is running out of gas, you may have gotten a piece of crud stuck in the float valve or the main jet.

Just an obvious but, you can be out of fuel and still see some in the tank, there is on, off and reserve. It will run out while in the on position and then you can turn it to the reserve and still have enough to hopefully make it back home.

There isn't much that can make it tear, is the airbox bolted down securely? Check for anything putting pressure on the intake boot. The intakes usually crack from age and then suck air.

it's not the part that is going to the airbox, it's the part that's going to the cylinder head. This thing is brand new OEM from the dealer.

The one that i took off when i first got it had a tear in it as well, almost in the same spot.

I tried starting it for like 30 seconds and took the plug out and it was completely dry. I had it set to the reserve position on the petcock valve. even took the gas line off to make sure fuel was going through it.

I'll have to check the carburetor tomorrow. However i can only imagine that the intake boot is the problem. I'm seriously pretty pissed. I'm tired of putting money into this thing!

A cracked boot will cause what you are explaining, but like you said it should not have happened so quickly. Make sure the airbox is bolted tightly to the frame, so it is not bouncing around tugging on the carburetor.

I'll look at it today when i get home, it seemed like the boot is stretched when i originally put it on as if the carburetor is pulling on it, is that normal? Maybe ill take the airbox out and re-seat it.

Make sure you put it on the right way if you put it on upside down it put pressure on the boot and it rips pretty quick.

Could the tear in the carb boot possibly be caused by a backfire through the carburetor?

yeah, a lean condition can cause backfire and the torn boot will allow more air which would cause a lean condition.

with both ends of the carb connections loose, it all should line up nicely without any tension. are there any motor mounts loose? like ag said make sure the boot is on correctly.
