so i put in a new piston and cam a while ago becuase my oil pump got cloged and burnt my cam and i desided to put a piston in while i had it apart. when i put it back together it would smoke till it warmed up (usualy 30 seconds to a minute) then clear up, i figured it was my valve seals because the head was running dry, i just put in kibblewhite valvles, new seals and springs and put it together. when i started it it was fine. the next day i go to start it and it starts smoking again just like before then clear up in 30 seconds to a minute. what the hell else could it be, i installed the seals and everything myself, could i have done it wrong? i pulled the old ones off with pliers and tapped the new ones on with a socket that fit it good, using the valve as a guid to make sure it went on right. could my guids be f***ed up and making it smoke? it runs great but just smokes a little. also could it be the oil im running? im using cheep autozone brand 10w 40, it didnt smoke till i put that in, could it have an effect or no?

my son has a 1999 warrior that i bought about 2 months ago. it was smoking and i did a top end bored it 20 over and replaced the valve seals also. broke it in properly and three weeks later it started smoking at start up too. last about 30 seconds to 1 minuite.then it stops. i have done plenty of engine work before and i dont think it was improper installation.
Min has done that since I rebuilt it to, i just call it the Warrior prelube. It really can't hurt anything. I'm guessing it is most likely valve seal leak by. there is a good chance that the oil puddles the valve seal after shut down, which might let a little oil by as the quad sets.
Mine is never lwo on oil so I don't worry about it.
i just bought a 96 warrior and changed the oil, to know that it was fresh. the manual calls for 20w-40. the yamaha shop insisted on 20w-50. ever since i changed the oil, it smokes when first started and at no other time. could it be that the oil is too thick? any help would be great, since i am new to the sport. thanks, curt
Well, I just bought my first 4-wheeler, almost on accident. Got what I think is a good price, machine runs good and in fairly good shape. '97 warrior.
Previous owner advised starting it with the fuel off, and then turning the fuel on. There is some fuel smoke in the exhaust. BUT there is also oil smoke. (I got it Thursday night, first ride yesterday about lunch, and gonna be a busy weekend so not alot of riding to do)
Just got the manual downloaded. Wondering if some good oil like Mobil, and using the one for high mileage with the seal conditioners and such would be worth the investment. I've never done heavy engine work, although i've had my first motorcycle bolt from bolt, with the exception that i never had the heads off or the cases split. That part was bulletproof and in great shape, so I left it be.....sorry, got off subject.
I'm open to suggestions on both the fuel and oil situations. Machine seems to be running with plenty of power and all, maybe I just call it upper cyl lube or somesuch and run the dog out of it.
well first i would do a compression test and see what that looks like...second it could probally be bad valve seals...dump the oil and gas out and deff replace with new...see how that works first then repost if none works
