BAD STARTER?

I JUST FINALLY GOT THE WARRIOR RUNNING - BUT YESTERDAY THE SOLENOID WOULD JUST BUZZ WHEN I TRIED TO START THE ATV. CHECKED ALL OF THE CONNECTIONS, CLEANED AND SANDED THEM. STILL JUST BUZZES. TOOK THE STARTER OFF AND CHECKED THE CONNECTION. BATTERY WAS CHARGED OVERNIGHT AND IS 1 MO. OLD. I'M SURE THATS NOT THE PROBLEM.CAN I DIRECT CONNECT THE POSITIVE SIDE (battery)TO THE TERMINAL ON THE STARTER AND CONNECT THE STARTER CASE TO THE NEGATIVE SIDE. SHOULD'NT THE STARTER SPIN. NOTE: I'VE GOT THE STARTER OFF OF THE ATV. iT WON'T DO ANYTHING. ALSO, WHEN I JUMPED ACROSS THE(NEW) SOLENOID IT JUST SPARKED. THE STARTER DIDN'T MOVE.----- IS THE STARTER BAD????? ALL THE CONNECTION ARE CORRECT AND TIGHT.

Take the starter cap off and check to see if the gears are messed up or if you see any obvious reasons why it is locked up.

sounds like a bad starter to me, but you can't say for sure without taking it apart and checking it out.

I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE STARTER APART. THE PARTS LOOK OK BUT IT TURNS FAIRLY HARD. I CLEANED THE PARTS AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. JUST SEEMS HARD TO TURN. IT IS TOGETHER RIGHT.

The starter should spin freely. If you take it to an auto parts store like Advance Auto they should be able to test it for you. You could also just hook it up directly to a battery charger (20+ amps) and see if it spins.

I would try jumping it and see if it cranks ok. Use a car if necessary, just dont leave it hooked up very long (connect and crank) If it does -bad battery. Sometimes new ones can be faulty. Solenoid chatter is usaully not enough current.

Your starter should be a little stiff due to the oil seal.

It was a short caused by the starter wire being up against the exhaust pipe and melting causing a short! Oh well I got a new starter anyway. The old one was real tired! Thanks for the help
