bought my kid a moto4 and it started smoking , we tore it down and cylinder and rings looked good, i think its the valve seals, can any atv shop put them in for you or what or can i put them in., i also have problems with reverse, it will go into reverse but will not pull any ideas.. forgot to mention this is a 86 yfm225 moto4, could someone also tell me the valve clearance on this thing
Sorry I don't have the specs you need; but I just wanted to give you my experience on a 1986 Moto 4, that I bought new.
Mine had been flawless in all these years. It has only seen utility work and never any really hard riding though. It has been a real good machine for me.
Of course the past riding history means a lot in the condition of any ATV.
The smoking issue may require rings/piston and probably a valve job, and guides, maybe. But that is only normal repairs for a well ridden machine.
The reverse issue, may be more of a problem to fix. I have seen that model with gear troubles. People could jam it into reverse, before the machine came to a dead stop. that is not a recipe for long gear life.
If the problems can be fixed with not too much money outlay, your son will have a nice machine to ride. Not a fast one, but it will do what most all ATV's will do.
thanks for the info, i took the head to a atv shop and had new guides and seals pressed in and i hooned the cylinder and put new rings in, it runs like a champ no smoking at all, have not tackled the reverse problem yet, hes ridin thats all that matters
