Tell him to get the Big Bear. CVT's suck plus the BB makes more torque.

You should be able to go to the yamaha web site and view each machine, then you have an option to compare one vs. another. then you or he can see side by side what each machine specs are.

Big Bear or Bruin?

He's probably already made his purchase, but I thought I'd chime in with my 2¢ worth from a parent's viewpoint...

I prefer the Bruin. The Ultramatic CVT from Yamaha has to be the best available, and it accelerates like the ass-end is on fire!

I have a '03 Kodiak 400 2WD, and had compared it closely with the Big Bear before purchase. Within 1-2 months they introduced the Bruin. Had it been sooner, I'd probably be riding a Bruin, however I do like the liquid cooling on the Kodiak. It's nice for the hot summers here in the south. As far as quickness is concerned, I have no trouble beating Big Bears, Ranchers, and Foremans to 50 MPH. That's about as fast as I want to go on a utility quad. I've had the CVT under water many times, and it has NEVER slipped.

It's nice to trail ride and enjoy the scenery without worrying about shifting, especially when the trail gets steep. You're always in the right gear. On the 2WD, if the downhill gets really steep you sometimes have to help out the engine braking a little with the front brakes.

Everybody that has ridden it has loved it... especially my buddy who currently has a 350 Big Bear. He plans to get a Kodiak or Bruin in the future.
